Nicholas M. Schnare

Deputy Assistant Secretary for Security, Insider Risk and Continuity

Mr. Nicholas M. Schnare is the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Security, Insider Risk and Continuity at the U.S. Department of Commerce and a member of the Senior Executive Service (SES). In this role, he is responsible for the Department's global security program, insider risk/threat program, continuity of Operations program, and Commerce Information and Operations Center.

Before this role, he served as the SES Director for Security at the Department of Commerce, responsible for a nationwide, multi-disciplined security program, including personnel security, physical security, law enforcement, information security, continuity and emergency management, and anti-terrorism. He also served as Assistant Director of the Department's Security and Emergency Management Division, responsible for the Department's Continuity of Operations Programs and Emergency Operations Center. Additionally, he was responsible for the Department's headquarters' overall physical security, security operations, and occupational emergency program.

Mr. Schnare has 25 years of leadership and operational, physical, and technical security, emergency management, insider risk/threat, and law enforcement experience. He previously held positions at the Smithsonian Institution, the Government Accountability Office (GAO), and the Missile Defense Agency. He is a veteran of the United States Army, having served seven years in the Military Police Corps, providing law and order to military communities and Combat Mission Support while deployed.  

Mr. Schnare is an Eagle Scout, holds a bachelor's degree in business management, and has completed various other coursework in security, emergency management, federal budgeting, project management, and contract administration. He is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute's Leadership for a Democratic Society Program, the American University Key Executive Leadership Program, and the Senior Executive Service (SES) Candidate Development Program. He has received a Department of Commerce Gold Award, a Silver Award, and three Bronze Awards for various significant accomplishments while at the Department of Commerce.        

Mr. Schnare is married to Carolyn Schnare and has two children.
