Controlled Unclassified Information

Due to the societal transition of information sharing from paper exclusively to one that increasingly relies on technology, the Department's Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) Program is administered by the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). By its very nature, however, the CUI Program is an information security program. Therefore, Information Security personnel assist the OCIO to ensure that CUI is properly handled and safeguarded. If there is commingling of CUI with classified national security information, incidents are referred to the Personnel Security Division for determining any violations or penalties.
