I’m the native-born (New Jersey) son of immigrants from Taiwan who came to the United States as graduate students to pursue opportunities for a better life. I was encouraged to embrace science and engineering from an early age, not only in school, but also through numerous trips to the natural history museum and support for hobbies like building model rockets.

Yesterday, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker released the second set of Top Markets Reports that provides the latest assessment of export opportunities for U.S. companies in 19 sectors. The Top Markets series is a collection of 19 sector-specific reports that are designed to help U.S. exporters compare markets across borders, using market intelligence and data to inform decision-making.

My parents immigrated to Los Angeles from India in the 1970s as another example of people in search of more opportunity and a better life for their family; they left their community, family, and friends in hope for more opportunity and a better life for their children.

This week I am visiting Los Angeles County to observe the last phase of the 2016 Census Test, currently underway here in California as well as in Harris County, Texas. Almost 225,000 households in Los Angeles County received a notification from the U.S. Census Bureau by mail 9 weeks ago asking them to complete the 2016 Census Test questionnaire online.

This year’s World Metrology Day is themed “Measurements in a Dynamic World,” so it’s fitting that we are also celebrating the formal launch of the NIST-Stanford Joint Initiative for Metrology in Biology, or JIMB. The initiative began as a pilot three years ago to answer the biotech industry’s calls for measurement tools.
