Dr. Lindsay M. Monte is performing the duties of the Chief Data Officer for the Department of Commerce, in the Office of the Undersecretary for Economic Affairs. An accomplished researcher, data scientist, and leader within government, she has spent her career building and using data to inform decision making.

Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Dr. Monte spent many years at the Census Bureau, where she was involved in every aspect of survey design, data processing, and data dissemination.  She was the Census Bureau’s delegate for multiple interagency taskforces, chaired the Interagency Council on Statistical Policy’s AANHPI data catalog committee, and served on multiple White House initiatives on behalf of the federal statistical service. 

Dr. Monte earned a B.A. from New York University, and both a M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University.  Her research interests include social welfare policy, labor economics, criminal justice, fertility and family formation, survey methods, and digital equity.  She has been awarded the Department of Commerce’s Bronze Medal Award, as well as the Department’s Outstanding Mentor Award.
