In many ways, my career at NIST so far has been ideal. I am extremely thankful that I’ve worked under outstanding leaders who supported and encouraged me as a woman, a working mom and a minority. Inclusivity is a core value at NIST, and for a very good reason. When people feel unwelcome, left out, looked down, upon or even afraid of their colleagues they cannot do their best work.

Karen Dunn Kelley, Under Secretary for Economic Affairs, performing the nonexclusive duties and functions of the Deputy Secretary of Commerce, delivered a keynote address at the 2018 National AAPI Business Summit that discussed the many contributions AAPI-owned businesses have made to the U.S. economy. Kelley noted that from 2007 to 2012, Asian-owned businesses in the U.S.

Counting, measuring, and producing data is one of the oldest and most essential functions of the Federal government. Starting with the Constitutional requirement to count our nation’s people, the government has been called on to provide information on business, agriculture, trade, government spending, and so on. At the Department of Commerce alone, we collect more than 20 terabytes of data a day.

Next month, workforce development will be a central focus of the 2018 SelectUSA Investment Summit, the top foreign direct investment event in the United States. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta will lead a panel on the subject with an emphasis on utilizing America’s most valuable economic resource: one of the most skilled and educated workforces in the world.

Serving as a Business Development Specialist really allows me to be part of a mission larger than myself. I am on an access to capital team and feel fortunate to work every day with diverse entrepreneurs, many of whom are committed to making a difference in their communities through job creation, training opportunities and nonprofit involvement.

On Monday, May 21, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross honored 43 American companies, representing 18 U.S. states and Guam, with the 2018 President’s “E” Award to kick off World Trade Week. The President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition any person, firm, and organization can receive for making a significant contribution to increasing U.S. exports.

My story in the United States began when my parents came to America in the 1970s and, like so many immigrants, hoped for a better life for their children. After saving enough money to invest in a business, they started a trophy and awards store in Los Angeles.
