Remarks by Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves at the Global Aerospace Summit

AS PREPARED FOR DELIVERY

Thank you, Vince, for that introduction. And thank you to the Chamber for inviting me to join you today.

It is my pleasure to be here on behalf of the Department of Commerce for the Chamber’s first Global Aerospace Summit. I’d also like to welcome our interagency colleagues from NASA, FAA, FCC, and TSA.

For more than 30 years, Commerce has served as the U.S. Government’s advocate for the commercial space industry.

The industry has grown from a few pioneers to a global phenomenon generating hundreds of billions of dollars, employing hundreds of thousands of workers, and resulting in the launch of thousands of satellites.

But the Commerce Department is not just a space advocate. Our bureaus are involved in a broad range of activities that actively support the growth of the space industry.

I’m especially proud of the work NOAA is doing to build a climate-ready nation.

Space-based technologies, including remote sensing data produced by NOAA satellites, have dramatically enhanced scientific understanding of the changing natural environment.

We’re using that data for innovative new programs.

For example, NOAA is working with local organizations in underserved communities to map the hottest parts of cities so that they can use this information to inform strategies to reduce the unhealthy and deadly effects of extreme heat.

And that’s just one example of Commerce’s work to support the space industry.

More broadly, we’re committed to enhancing commercial space situational awareness, the development of carefully coordinated standards and operating principles, flexible and sensible regulations, and sustained dialogue between government and industry.

That’s exactly what today is about. I’m looking forward to our discussion.

So, thank you again for having me. With that, I’ll turn it back over to you, Vince.
