Remarks by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo at the Trade Winds Plenary Session in Dubai

AS PREPARED FOR DELIVERY

Thank you, Camille, for that introduction, and for all the work you put into this event. Your Excellencies, thank for participating in this plenary session.

It’s been three years since the last Trade Winds Forum, and the U.S. Department of Commerce is delighted to be renewing our signature trade event here in Dubai.

I’d like to recognize the American private sector delegates here today. Your ambition, optimism, and energy represent the very best of the U.S. business community.

Over a thousand U.S. businesses have participated in previous Trade Winds events, leading to over $3.4 billion in exports. I’m excited to see how this group builds on that track record this week.

The opportunities you pursue here and throughout the region will not only create American jobs and strengthen your businesses, they will also support the Biden Administration’s priorities in the region, and further reinforce our close bilateral relationship with the UAE.

Earlier today, I enjoyed celebrating those ties as President Biden’s personal representative to the U.S. National Day event at the World Expo. Having enjoyed such a warm reception from our Emirati friends and knowing the diligence and dedication of our staff in the region, I am confident that you will find ample opportunity at this week’s forum and trade mission.

For over half a century, the U.S. and UAE have forged a warm and productive partnership. Our ties extend beyond robust trade and investment flows to include cooperation in crucial sectors and collaboration on key Biden Administration priorities.

The Biden Administration is also committed to advancing equity. It underpins everything we do at the Commerce Department, from expanding broadband access to ensuring all communities can share in the benefits of trade and exporting.

As a former businesswoman, I’m passionate about providing the next generation of women with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to break down barriers and establish more prosperous and secure lives for themselves and their families.

To that end, I encourage you to engage with our inaugural Women Empowered Leave Legacies Through Trade & Investment Summit, which is taking place alongside Trade Winds and coincides with International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

This week is full of opportunity, both for the businesses that made the trip, and to advance the U.S.-UAE relationship. I look forward to seeing what you accomplish, and I wish you the best over the next few days.

Shukran.
