Statement from Secretary Raimondo on the European Commission’s Release of Draft Adequacy Decision Regarding the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo released the following statement following the European Commission’s release of its draft adequacy decision regarding the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework:

“The United States welcomes the European Commission’s release of its draft adequacy decision regarding the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (DPF). The draft adequacy decision represents a critical next step to fully address the Court of Justice of the European Union’s 2020 decision in the Schrems II case. Under the Framework, the United States has implemented strengthened safeguards for signals intelligence activities, developed a new redress mechanism, and updated privacy principles for U.S. organizations. We are confident that these measures will restore stability to the data flows that thousands of U.S. and EU firms depend on - the lifeblood of the $7.1 trillion transatlantic economy.

“We are closely reviewing the draft decision and look forward to appropriate consideration of the draft by the European Data Protection Board, the European Parliament, and EU Member States. We are committed to working with the European Commission to implement the DPF and to facilitate the transfers of personal data that benefit individuals and companies in the EU and U.S.”
