Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo Applauds Final Passage of CHIPS Legislation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo released the following statement following the House’s bipartisan passage of legislation to revitalize domestic semiconductor manufacturing and invest in American scientific leadership.

“Today, members of Congress from both parties voted to support America’s economy, America’s workers, and America’s global competitiveness by committing the resources necessary to support domestic scientific innovation and build more chips in the U.S. For the last 40 years, America’s semiconductor manufacturing economy withered while companies chased lower costs half a world away, creating both an economic and national security vulnerability.

“With its historic investment in American chipmaking, the CHIPS and Science Act helps fulfill the Biden administration’s goal of revitalizing our domestic manufacturing economy while securing access to an essential technology so America can continue to lead in the 21st Century.

“I’m grateful to Speaker Pelosi and House members from both sides of the aisle who worked diligently to craft legislation that protects our scientific leadership and creates high-quality, good-paying jobs for hundreds of thousands of Americans. Thanks to their hard work and President Biden’s steadfast leadership, Congress just passed a landmark investment that protects America’s competitive edge, invests in our workers and protects our national security.”
