Secretary Raimondo Statement on Implementation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act – and the Newly-Released Strategy to Combat the use of Forced Labor in Supply Chains

AS PREPARED FOR DELIVERY

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo issued a statement on today’s implementation of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), and the recent release of the Strategy to Prevent the Importation of Goods Mined, Produced, or Manufactured with Forced Labor in the People’s Republic of China, which was prepared by the Department of Homeland Security in partnership with the Commerce Department and other federal agencies and delivered to Congress.

“Protecting global human rights is central to our values as Americans, and today’s implementation of the UFLPA and the recent release of the strategy is a clear message to China and the rest of the global community that the U.S. will take decisive actions against entities that participate in the abhorrent use of forced labor.

“The strategy is an extraordinary step forward to better align the resources, expertise, and influence of the Commerce Department and our sister agencies to prevent goods made with forced labor from entering our borders and inflicting harmful effects on our economy and workforce. The Commerce Department looks forward to collaborating with industry and non-government partners who contributed their voices to help shape this strategy, and with Congress which took bold, bipartisan action to set the groundwork for this strategy through enactment of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act.

“As laid out in this report, the Commerce Department will continue to provide guidance and information to assist U.S. firms as they examine their supply chains to reduce the risk of goods made with forced labor from entering the United States."
