Today, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper applauded Vietnamese automaker VinFast’s announcement of a multi-billion dollar-investment in building electric vehicles and batteries in North Carolina. VinFast’s investment will create more than 7,000 jobs in the region and fuel American efforts to combat the climate crisis.

“EVs are the future of auto manufacturing; the only question is whether we want EVs and their components made here in America or somewhere else,” said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. “The Biden administration is committed to making more things in America. That includes making EVs – and the chips that help them run – here at home. If we want to meet our climate and EV goals, we have to start producing more components, including semiconductors, in America. We applaud VinFast’s investment in American workers, American manufacturing, and America’s efforts to build the technology that will help us create jobs of the future, but we also need Congress to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act.”

“North Carolina is quickly becoming the center of our country’s emerging, clean energy economy,” said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. “VinFast’s transformative project will bring many good jobs to our state, along with a healthier environment as more electric vehicles take to the road to help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

Vinfast’s investment showcases the Biden Administration’s efforts to grow the clean transportation workforce, accelerate the expansion of clean transportation infrastructure, and double down on this progress with the Bipartisan Innovation Act. The administration is currently working to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act - legislation to revitalize domestic semiconductor manufacturing and build the chips that form essential components in electric vehicles and clean energy technology. The legislation will also further the administration’s efforts to both invent and make the technologies of the future in America.

VinFast’s announcement builds upon recent announcements made by General Motors, Samsung, Intel, Boeing and others who have committed to manufacturing their products– from electric vehicles to the semiconductor chips that power them– right here in the United States. By helping to bring American manufacturing back to our shores, the Biden Administration is ensuring that American workers are able to secure good-paying jobs here at home while maintaining our country's competitive edge on the world stage.
