Following President Biden’s Call to Expand Domestic Semiconductor Production, Commerce Secretary Raimondo Tours MIT.nano Laboratory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bipartisan Innovation Act would invest $52 billion in domestic semiconductor production

On Wednesday, March 2, following President Biden’s State of the Union address, where he called on Congress to pass the Bipartisan Innovation Act, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo toured the MIT.nano lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to discuss the need for increased domestic production of semiconductors and funding for essential research and development.

This visit comes as Secretary Raimondo works to build consensus around the Bipartisan Innovation Act and its $52 billion in Congressional funding to spur domestic semiconductor manufacturing, increase our global competitiveness, and bring down costs for consumers.

“We have seen first-hand the risks we face from overreliance on China in our supply chains. Revitalizing US domestic manufacturing capabilities in core areas such as semiconductors is critical to keeping the United States competitive globally,” Secretary Raimondo said. “The Bipartisan Innovation Act is essential to creating jobs and strengthening our manufacturing sector, which will create good-paying jobs and bolster our supply chains. Every day we wait is a day we fall further behind. The students and researchers at the MIT.nano lab are at the cutting edge of their field. It’s imperative that the United States continues investing in education-to-workforce pipelines in science and technology to bolster our national security and help our economy prosper.”

Secretary Raimondo was joined by Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui, MIT President L. Rafael Reif, MIT.nano Director Professor Vladimir Bulović, MIT Vice President for Research Maria T. Zuber, and MIT Lincoln Laboratory Director Dr. Eric D. Evans.
