WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Industry Leaders Applaud Swift House Passage of America COMPETES Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Following passage of the House’s America COMPETES Act, industry leaders applauded Congress for taking a critical step forward in getting the President’s proposed $52 billion in chips funding signed into law. Passage of the bill followed the release of an alarming report by the Department of Commerce earlier this month regarding the semiconductor chip shortage.

Following House passage of the legislation, a number of businesses and industry leaders joined Secretary Raimondo in calling for swift passage of a final bill that can be sent to the President’s desk. Here’s what they are saying:

Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association: “We are especially grateful for Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s leadership in getting the important CHIPS Act over the finish in the House…. When enacted, this will help level the semiconductor playing field for the U.S. with competitors around the globe,” said Bill Long, President and CEO of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association.

Ford Motor Company: “As America’s No. 1 auto manufacturer, assembling more vehicles and employing more hourly workers in the U.S. than any other automaker, Ford Motor Company thanks the House of Representatives for passing CHIPS Act funding to strengthen the domestic semiconductor supply chain and Representatives Dingell, Kildee, and Stevens for their leadership on this important issue. Ensuring a steady and reliable supply of chips will be vital as we lead the electric vehicle revolution, investing more than $30 billion in electric vehicles through 2025 and electrifying our most popular vehicles, including the all-electric F-150 Lightning heading to customers this spring. CHIPS funding will help Ford alleviate production constraints caused by the global semiconductor shortage, keep our manufacturing lines humming, and deliver connected and electric vehicles with the exciting features our customers want,” said Steven Croley, Chief Policy Officer and General Counsel, Ford Motor Company.

American Automakers: “House passage of CHIPS Act funding moves the U.S. one step closer to strengthening American semiconductor production. No other U.S. industry has been as severely impacted by the shortage of semiconductors as the automotive industry and its workforce.  It is vital that American automakers and the U.S. manufacturing supply chain have uninterrupted access to semiconductors, which are essential for automotive manufacturing.  American Automakers urge the House and Senate to quickly work out differences on this legislation to expand U.S. semiconductor production.”

SEMI: “We are very pleased to see the House pass the America COMPETES Act of 2022 including robust funding for the CHIPS Act programs…This bill will strengthen the semiconductor supply chain in the United States to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century as well as bolster crucial workforce development programs. We look forward to working with Congress and the Biden Administration to quickly enact this funding into law.”

SkyWater Technology: “I want to commend Speaker Pelosi and the U.S. House for taking action on the America Competes Act today. This bill contains key elements that will directly benefit the semiconductor industry, our Nation’s economy, and takes a big step forward to both reshoring critical capabilities and stopping the erosion of America’s share of chip manufacturing.”

Semiconductor Industry Association: “House passage of CHIPS Act investments is a significant step toward strengthening America’s leadership in semiconductors, which are foundational to our economy, national security, and global leadership in the transformative technologies of now and the future. We urge leaders in the House and Senate to work together promptly on a bipartisan, bicameral competitiveness bill containing CHIPS Act investments that can be passed by both chambers and signed into law by the president. Getting this legislation across the finish line will help strengthen U.S. chip production and innovation for many years to come.”

The Information Technology Industry Council: “The America COMPETES Act provides a critical boost to America’s technological leadership, economic competitiveness, and national security. Its prioritization of research and development, entrepreneurship, and science will strengthen the national innovation ecosystem. Importantly, its investments in domestic semiconductor production will create a more resilient supply chain in the long-term. We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for advancing this important bill and look forward to working with lawmakers in both the House and Senate to further refine the legislation and get a final bill to the president’s desk without delay.”

Global Foundries: “We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for taking action today to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor industry, which is vital to supply chains, the economy, and national defense.  We urge Congress to move swiftly to finalize the bill and send it to the President for his signature.”
