Semiconductor Industry

Semiconductors power our lives, including vital technologies such as smartphones, computers, cars, medical devices, and almost everything with an on and off switch. They are essential components of the technologies that will shape our future, such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and clean energy.

CHIPS for America

In August 2022, President Biden signed the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act into law. The law provides the Department of Commerce with $50 billion in funding to revitalize the U.S. semiconductor industry, create jobs, support American innovation, and protect our economic and national security.

The National Institute of Standards Technology (NIST) is uniquely positioned to successfully administer the CHIPS for America program because of the bureau’s strong relationships with U.S. industries, its deep understanding of the semiconductor ecosystem, and its trusted reputation. To date, CHIPS for America has allocated over $32 billion in proposed funding across 16 states to build factories domestically and has proposed billions more in research and development programs to solidify the U.S. as a leader in semiconductor innovation and create an estimated 115,000+ jobs.

As CHIPS for America invests in domestic semiconductor research, development, and manufacturing, the Department of Commerce is also prioritizing robust international engagement. Through bilateral and multilateral dialogues and business-to-business and government-to-business forums, the Department is working with like-minded partners to strengthen and diversify the global semiconductor supply chain.

For more information on achievements over the past two years, see the White House fact sheet or the CHIPS for America two-year progress report infographic. For inquiries about CHIPS for America, reach out to [email protected].

ITA Semiconductor Team

The International Trade Administration (ITA) has a Semiconductor Team dedicated to enhancing the global competitiveness of the U.S. semiconductor industry and increasing the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain. Our Semiconductor Team can also assist U.S. semiconductor companies to find new opportunities and overcome trade barriers in the global market.
