*The comparison between job openings and the additional women who would be in the labor force is meant to be illustrative. An important limitation is that the information comes from two BLS data sources with distinct sampling frames. Specifically, the sources are the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (based on a survey of establishments) and the Current Population Survey (based on a survey of households). In addition, it is unclear whether more family friendly work policies would by themselves cause the gap in labor force participation between men and women to completely close, as they also exist in other countries as well.
