John M. Thompson joined the Department of Commerce, Office of the General Counsel, in June 2023 serving as the Chief Administrative Officer.  Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Thompson served as the Assistant Director for Department Administration and Oversight (DAOG) with the Justice Management Division (JMD) at the Department of Justice (DOJ).  There he had direct budgetary oversight of the Department’s General Administration (GA) appropriation, which funded 15 leadership and policy offices and 26 JMD staff offices.  Mr. Thompson’s responsibilities also included coordinating and enabling operation of the Department’s Working Capital Fund (WCF) – providing centralized reimbursable administrative services and investments of more than $2 billion, which included budget, financial management, procurement, space management, physical security, mail and multimedia, telecommunications, and information technology (IT).

Mr. Thompson has previously served as the Branch Chief for Budget and Performance Policy at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources (ASFR); and as the Director of Funds Control at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Office of Office of Housing-FHA Commissioner.

Mr. Thompson obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
