The mission here at the U.S. Census Bureau is to serve as the nation’s leading provider of quality data about its people and economy. Our goal is to provide the best mix of timeliness, relevancy, quality, and cost for the data we collect and services we provide. As I took on my new role as Director, I was heartened by the fact that I would be supported by the amazing and dedicated staff who help fulfill the Census Bureau’s mission each and every day, including the critical preparations for the 2020 Census.
In my more than 25 years of statistical, research and senior management experience in the federal government, I have served as director of a number of programs, offices and agencies. Most recently, I headed the Office of Strategic Information, Research, and Planning for the Peace Corps. But I also have led the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, both of which work in close partnership with the Census Bureau.
With about 15 months to go until Census Day 2020, I am dedicated to ensuring that the workforce is ready, willing and able to accomplish the goal of the 2020 Census to count everyone once, only once, and in the right place. We have a talented, experienced and committed team devoted to this one goal.
As director, I’d like to focus energy in priority areas including:
- Achieving results. I am dedicated to providing the necessary leadership and fulfilling the Census Bureau's mission as well as performing its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
- Maintaining organizational and professional integrity. I pledge to support a federal statistical agency culture of principles and practices grounded in relevance to policy issues, credibility among data users, and trust among data providers.
- Fostering workforce excellence. I will lead efforts to support and engage in a diverse workforce that provides quality products and services, bolsters employee morale and is recognized for outstanding performance.
Accurate data is an essential underpinning for our representative government as well as a thriving economy. While the Census Bureau faces and has faced significant challenges, I know it has the talents and commitments for meeting and surpassing them. I look forward to working with all Census Bureau staff to fulfill the agency’s mission and to conduct the most accurate decennial census we possibly can. These important goals and challenges require a united team effort. I know we have the winning team at the Census Bureau, and I am excited to see where the next year takes us!
