A Conversation with the Architect of the FGP Initiative

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Office of Equal Employment Opportunity invites First Generation Professionals (FGPs) in the federal government workforce to an event that will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 at SEC Headquarters located at 100 F Street, NE, Washington, DC 20549.

FGPs are trailblazers building careers without the model of a parent or caregiver in a professional career. FGPs have relied on tenacity, resilience, and innovation, and are in the federal workplace – they are our colleagues, supervisors, and senior leaders.

The theme for the SEC’s Oct. 10 workshop is Vision, Journey, and Opportunity.

  • The Vision or idea of a professional career often starts with a parent, teacher, or mentor and leads to a journey.
  • FGPs embarked on a Journey to fulfill their vision, often without a roadmap or valuable resources such as professional connections or advantageous opportunities.
  • In the ongoing competition for talented employees, there is an Opportunity to recruit and support FGPs whose career journey may result in a “non-traditional” resume with tremendous potential.

The workshop will feature fireside chats and panel discussions with successful FGPs, as well as presentations on topics related to networking, financial literacy, marketing yourself as an entrepreneur, resilience and perseverance, and silencing the inner critic. Space is extremely limited, so please register by sending an email expressing your intent to participate in-person to fgp@sec.gov as soon as possible.

When registering, please indicate whether you require a reasonable accommodation and type of accommodation required.
