Latoya Murphy currently serves as the Director of the Office of the Executive Secretariat in the Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Commerce. As Director, Ms. Murphy assumes overall responsibility and direction for the Office of the Secretary’s internal control process while overseeing the Office’s administrative department, which is responsible for managing a $15 million budget.
Prior to being promoted to Director, Ms. Murphy served as Deputy Director of the Office of Executive Secretariat beginning in June 2009. As Deputy Director, Ms. Murphy oversaw the Office’s correspondence unit, which is responsible for drafting and approving all written materials in coordination with the Department’s bureaus for both the Secretary and Deputy Secretary, including their daily briefing books. In this capacity, Ms. Murphy also served as a reporting point of contact and liaison for the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs and the National Security Council.
Ms. Murphy has a background in the financial services arena. Prior to receiving her political appointment to the Department of Commerce, she worked for Citigroup Inc. in New York, where she held various titles, including Community Relations Vice President, Senior Project Manager, and Director of Operations. Ms. Murphy also worked as manager of Federal and State Government Relations for Verizon Communications where she most notably served as the Washington, D.C., liaison to the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston.
A veteran of the Clinton for Senate and McCall for Governor campaigns, Ms. Murphy possesses an extensive campaign finance background. A graduate of New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service with a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Ms. Murphy currently resides in Washington, DC, with her two daughters, Morgan and McKenzie.
