Gutierrez Commends the President's Export Council

WASHINGTON—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez issued the following statement after participating in a conference call with the President’s Export Council:

"Today’s meeting of the President’s Export Council (PEC) was productive, informative, and insightful.  I commend PEC for understanding the value of renewing Trade Promotion Authority (TPA).  The Council’s ongoing work and their commitment to America’s economic prosperity are greatly appreciated by the President and his Administration.

"TPA and our Free Trade Agreements are vital keys to further opening markets for U.S. farmers, manufacturers and service providers. Last year we exported a record $1.4 trillion. Renewal of TPA is essential to keep this momentum going and to keep American companies competitive in global trade.

"Under President Bush’s leadership, we have implemented free trade agreements with 11 countries. Last year, export growth outpaced import growth and exports supported millions of high-paying U.S. jobs. I look forward to working with Congressional leaders to give American workers and businesses the tools they need to continue exporting to all corners of the world."

Background:
