CARLOS M. GUTIERREZ SWORN IN AS 35TH
SECRETARY OF COMMERCE

WASHINGTON, DC--Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today was sworn in as the 35th U.S. Secretary of Commerce. Gutierrez will serve as the voice of business in government, oversee a diverse Cabinet agency of 40,000 workers and direct a $5 billion budget focused on promoting and advocating for American businesses, both at home and around the world.

“It is a tremendous privilege for me to serve as Secretary of Commerce. I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to serve my country,” Gutierrez said. “Secretary Evans leaves big shoes to fill at Commerce. I look forward to building upon his outstanding record and continuing to carry forward the President’s vision for a strong economy.”

During Gutierrez’s first day, he addressed Commerce Department employees and introduced his wife, Edi, of 25 years. In his remarks Gutierrez outlined his plans to continue the administration’s efforts to open markets and build a stronger America.

“President Bush has a bold agenda to strengthen our economy and the Commerce Department will play an important role in this process. Through our efforts to open markets we can work together with other departments and Congress to strengthen America’s economy.

“Together, we’ll make a lasting contribution during a critical period in the life of our nation.”

Gutierrez will serve as a key member of President Bush’s economic team, advising the President on trade, business, energy policy and overall U.S. economic policy. Gutierrez will work to expand free trade, create higher paying jobs and strengthen America’s economy.
