Rob Atkinson, President ITIF, speaks about the COMPETES report Transcript

For years, ITIF has argued that the U.S. is losing its competitive edge including in innovation and that we need to have a coherent national innovation and competitiveness strategy. That’s why two years ago we worked closely with Senators Amy Klobuchar, Mark Warner and George LaMieux to help them with a provision in the COMPETES Act that the President signed to charge the U.S. Department of Commerce with developing and creating a national competitiveness and innovation strategy.

So I was very pleased to be part of the advisory board that helped the Commerce Department shape this strategy and I think the report advances a number of important concepts and policies including policies like expanding the R&D tax credit, expanding STEM education, making sure that we expand federal support for research which is going to be so critical to our future.

But I think the thing, the part of the report, really to me the most important part of the report is that the report lays out the fact that we aren’t doing as well as we could be, that our manufacturing sector has lost jobs not just because of productivity but because we’ve lost competitiveness in manufacturing. So I encourage policymakers and citizens around the country to take the report’s message seriously and to work together in a bipartisan way to really craft the kinds of aggressive policies that we need if we’re going to win in the global economy and create the kinds of good jobs for all Americans.
