U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke issued the following statement today on the president’s appointment of Jeff Immelt as Chairman of the Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

“Jeff Immelt is an inspired choice to chair President Obama’s new Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.  Continued economic recovery in America will depend heavily on our ability to revitalize our manufacturing and industrial base and sell more of what we make to consumers around the world.  During his tenure as CEO of General Electric, Jeff has significantly grown GE’s advanced manufacturing operations in areas ranging from airplane engines to wind turbines and has maintained GE’s status as one of America's top exporters.  He’ll be an indispensable source of advice for the president and his entire economic team, and I am looking forward to working with him.”
