$3 Million EDA Investment Check Presented to Calexico, Calif., for Infrastructure Development
Calexico, Calif. (Sept. 4)—Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Crow and U.S. Representative Bob Filner presented a $3 million EDA investment check to the city of Calexico to help build the infrastructure needed to develop the Town Center Plaza and the Portico/Kloke industrial and commercial sites. The investment is expected to generate $400 million in private investment and create more than 2,000 new jobs. (More)
Wilmington, N.C. on Track for September 8 Digital Television Transition
Washington (Sept. 3)—As Wilmington prepares to be the first market to transition from analog to digital television on September 8, the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced today that more than 36,000 Wilmington households have requested 67,000 coupons and redeemed 25,000 from the TV Converter Box Coupon Program. According to applications, more than 17,000 of these households rely on television with an antenna. (More)

NIST Researchers Instruct Fire Chiefs and Trainers in Latest Fire Dynamics Research
Gaithersburg, Md. (Sept. 3)—Researchers from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Building & Fire Research Laboratory held a fire dynamics conference for 425 fire chiefs and trainers. Researchers used videos of their studies to show firefighters how convection, conduction and ventilation including wind, affect a fire in just the first few minutes. Other topics of discussion included how building geometry, materials, furnishings, ventilation and firefighting tactics can influence fire growth and spread leading to untenable conditions for firefighters. Center of Gustav Makes Landfall Near Cocodrie, Louisiana
Washington (Sept. 1)—The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center continues to track Hurricane Gustav and a warning remains in effect from just East of High Island, Texas eastward to the Mississippi-Alabama border including the City of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
