NOAA Announces Season’s First Hurricane Forms in Atlantic
Washington (July 7)—The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center is tracking Hurricane Bertha as it spins over the open Atlantic. Bertha is not an immediate threat to land. Each year, an average of eleven tropical storms develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Many of these remain over the ocean and never impact the U.S. coastline. Six of these storms become hurricanes each year. (More)
