U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke Statement on Trade Numbers

WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke issued the following statement on the release of the August 2009 U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services report by the Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Today’s report showed that U.S. exports increased by 0.2 percent to $128.2 billion since July 2009. Imports declined 0.6 percent to $158.9 billion.

“Exports of goods and services increased in August for a fourth consecutive month,” Locke said. “We’re encouraged by the continued signs that the U.S. and other major economies are beginning to expand again, but we must remain steadfast in our efforts to boost U.S. exports and put Americans back to work.”
