Ellen Moran, Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Commerce

Ellen Moran serves as Chief of Staff to Secretary of Commerce and was appointed April 23, 2009. Prior to joining the Department of Commerce, Ellen served as White House Director of Communications during the early months of the Obama administration.

From 2004-2008, Ellen was executive director of EMILY's List, overseeing the national staff and directing the strategic direction of the organization to provide financial assistance to female candidates in the Democratic Party. In 2004 she worked with the Democratic National Committee, managing placement of presidential advertising and directed media efforts in 20 states.

Ellen's political background includes managing governor, Senate and House campaigns, as well as helping to plan both of President Clinton’s inaugurals. She oversaw international democracy work in Indonesia for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). In 1993, she designed EMILY’s List’s campaign staff training program and served as its first director of voter mobilization efforts in 1994.

Ellen is a 1988 graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., with degrees in political science and English literature. She is married to Kirk Fabel and they have two children.
